![]() WowMatrix aims to be an elegant and easy-to-use WoW Addon Updater. It is 100% free and runs on both Mac OS X and Windows. Currently WowMatrix already supports the auto-updating of Ace addons; more WoW addon websites will continue to be added. For more information and to download WowMatrix, visit the following link: WowMatrix - WoW Addon Updater for Mac and Windows www.wowmatrix.com Please feel free to post feedback here while we continue to work on the project. |

This looks pretty cool. A few questions:
How does it handle externals? How does it treat new library versions? You say it automatically updates, does this mean that you run scheduled updates or that it's a one-click affair? For my own curiosity: what did you write this tool in? =P Also, one suggestion: You might want to link to the addon page in the addon list (the wiki in the case of WowAce addons, and the addon page for addons from another site). |

From a quick look at your site, it would appear that WoWMatrix only downloads from your site, how often are you updating your list of addons? How does it work if we want something not on your list (let's assume its something from files.wowace.com, and ignore the other ui sites)

The automatic updating refers to the one-click affair. Regarding what this tool was written in, make a guess, I'd be interesting to see what people think it's written in. ![]() Thanks for the suggestion regarding the addon pages, I'll be sure to check them out. |

The addons listed at the wowmatrix.com site have just been a feature of the site for some time prior to the release of the software, and is currently unrelated to the software. However, we plan to integrate the site such that in the future it will list (and possibly mirror) the latest versions of addons as discovered by the software. This will help relieve some of the stress experienced by sites such as WowAce. |

Theres 3 things I disagree with about this:
1. The addons on your website are as much as over 3 months out of date. 2. If you are using some kind of script to download addons from wowace to your website, you are avoiding the advertising that is paying our servers. 3. You did not discuss this 'bandwidth releaving' with any admins.

Regarding downloading from the WowAce site, other software updater clients are doing the same thing, not only with WowAce (which is known to be very tolerant with software updaters) but also with other sites that also happen to have advertising on them. However, unlike most other software updaters, we plan to ensure that the number of "pings" remains small regardless of the number of users at any one time. As such this tool is in fact much more server-friendly. As for the relieving of server resources, this is exactly what other addon-related sites such as incgamers and curse (both of which have a ton of ads) do when they list addons that also happen to be listed at WowAce. The big picture is that the various addon-related sites and software updaters help each other directly and indirectly, and there is more than enough advertising revenue potential to go around the various players in this growing market. |
